Clarkstown North rolls past South

October
9

There was a lot of banter on the thread talking about the results in our Class AA poll. People were discussing North Rockland, Clarkstown South, and Clarkstown North among others.

Well, I had a chance to see North in action for the second time this season. The Rams knocked off the Vikings 5-0 in the latest [...]

Watch the talking head Part 2 1/2

October
9

Had a chance to discuss the area boys soccer scene with RNN anchor Ben Sosenko in my bi-weekly spot today. I chatted with him a bit about Bronxville, Byram Hills, North Rockland and Suffern. I wish I could have talked about more, but we only get a few seconds to get everything in.

You can check [...]

The voting precincts have closed

October
5

Our poll has been up for over a week and here’s the final results as tabulated by that great mathemetician Rod (aka) Roderick Boone. It was almost too close to call, but John Jay-East Fishkill wins slightly over Greeley. We’ve had 153 votes since the poll began Sept. 25. Thank you all for voting. I [...]

New Rochelle snaps White Plains’ streak

October
4

Big, big win for the Huguenots today. They took down rival White Plains 4-0 in the first boys soccer game on New Rochelle’s revamped McKenna Field. Not only did the Hugenots snap a three-year losing skid to White Plains, but they also ended the Tigers’ 28-game League I-A winning streak. First, you have to give [...]

It’s Bronxville over Valhalla in the Boogie Down

October
3

Ok, so really it was in Bronxville, which of course, isn’t Da Bronx. But hey, I made you look didn’t I?

Anyway, Bronxville looked solid in its 3-0 win over Valhalla. It was a matchup featuring the No. 3 team in the state in Class (da Broncos) against the state’s top-ranked Class C team (da Vikings). [...]

White Plains edges Scarsdale

October
2

Got my first chance to see White Plains today. The Tigers took on rival Scarsdale and wound up winning 2-1 on the strength of two second-half penalty kick goals from senior Henry Acosta.

It was a typical Scarsdale-White Plains match: Low scoring and hard-fought with more than a few yellow cards doled out.

White Plains didn’t seem [...]

First state rankings are in

September
28

And a whopping 13 Section 1 teams are ranked. Valhalla has the honor as the top-ranked team from the Lower Hudson Valley. The Vikings are ranked No. 2 in Class C, a worthy ranking if I ever saw one. I’ll get my first up close look at them next week in their big game with [...]

Rye tops Pelham 4-1

September
27

Got my first opportunity to watch Pelham and Rye in action this season. Maybe it was because I showed up (yeah right) but Rye got its offense rolling in the right direction. The Garnets scored four unanswered goals, including three in the second half, and emerged victorious in the League III-B game.

Overall, Rye has some [...]

Watch the talking head Part Deux

September
25

I had the fortune of heading over to the RNN studios today and chat with sports anchor Ben Sosenko about the boys soccer season so far. I’m sure many of you didn’t get a chance to see it since it aired between 5 and 7 p.m. and most players and coaches were likely either playing [...]

Thursday’s scores

September
20

It’s one of those crazy days when it seems like every team at every school is playing. Talk about a hectic night here at Varsity Central … Oh, boy!

Anyway, here’s the scores that we had reported to us. Big win for Keio against Port Chester. The Unicorns aren’t scoring much, but just enough. As long [...]

Heading for the Hills

September
19

Just got back from watching Byram Hills play its best game yet of the season. I have to tell you that I was very, very astonished with what I saw because Pearl River isn’t a team full of pushovers. The Pirates are one of those teams that could easily make some serious noise in the [...]

Clarkstown North tops Scarsdale

September
18

Clarkstown North came across the TZ today and picked up a big 3-2 non-league win over Scarsdale at Quaker Ridge Elementary. The Rams had struggled a bit after their season-opening win against Spring Valley, going winless in their previous three outings heading into this one. But they got a solid effort up front from freshman [...]

We’re finally off and running

September
17

Last week was a slow week and I wasn’t able to get out to any games, but that will change this week. So prepare to be inundated with plenty of thoughtful insight, game recaps, discussion questions and more as the season begins to kick into high gear over the next week or so.

Today, I covered [...]

Watch the talking head

September

So on my first real day back from vacation, I was summoned to the RNN studios to talk about expectations for the boys soccer season with sports anchor Ben Sosenko. It was a short segment that appeared last night on NewsCenter Now, a weeknight news cast brought to you by The Journal News/LoHud.com and RNN.

After [...]

As I quickly duck my head into the room for a day before completing the final few hours of my much-needed vacation, I wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to eyeball our boys soccer preview. So just in case you didn’t see it Thursday, I’ll be happy to share it with ya.

Here’s the [...]

Who ya got?

August

Ok, gang. The season is just about a week away, although most teams don’t actually start until Sept. 10. But in the meantime, as we wait for the gams to begin, I want to know your predictions. Who will win Class AA, Class A, Class B, and Class C? Tell me who your going with [...]

Jeff GoldJeff Gold reached the the soccer pinnacle when he was 7 years old. As the star of the Irvington Hurricanes, he led his team to a 13-0-2 record, scoring a goal in every game. Jeff didn't improve much and all of the others did. He only scored two goals as a varsity player, and one time, he was called Josh, so only one goal was official. Jeff worked at The Journal News for a year after graduating from Colgate University. He left for three years to work at Newsday, and returned to The Journal News in 2007. READ MORE
