Just so you guys can go ahead and still comment on the state playoffs (for however long that might be), don’t worry I didn’t forget about you. You can post your comments on this thread.

Have at it and good luck to all the teams that are still alive.

Guys,

Today is my final day at The Journal News after two-plus years. I would like to thank each and everyone from the bottom of my heart for the heartfelt e-mails and phone calls regarding my writing and coverage during my time here. I’ll never forget it.

Girls soccer score update

November
6

My man Jake called to tell me about the goings on up there in beautiful Oneonta. Here’s the latest:

In Class B, Briarcliff led Lansing 2-1 at the half. Liana Cornacchio has both goals for the Bears, who increased their lead with another goal in the second half and are up 3-1.

In Class AA, Greeley [...]

Anyway, I have a bit of news to share with you, so here goes:

Ladies and gentlemen, below is the entire list of this year’s Section 1 honorees. Congrats to all of those who made it. You guys, [...]

Stop me if you’ve heard this before

November
2

Seems like Fordham Prep is playing for a CHSAA city and state championship every year. Why should this year be any different?

I just talked to Rams coach Pete McNamara. He’s preparing for Fordham Prep’s game tomorrow against St. Francis. The teams are playing for the CHSAA A city title at 3 p.m. at St. John’s [...]

Byram Hills edges Rye, sets up rematch with Lakeland

November
1

First, let me say that it seems like every time I go to Armonk to watch Byram Hills (even in the spring when I watched a boys lax game there) there’s a relentless wind. What, is there some kind of wind tunnel up there? Sheesh?

Anyway, I’ve been fortunate enough to watch some good soccer [...]

Shocker: No. 5 Greeley knocks off top-seeded Arlington

November
1

Just got off the phone with Greeley coach Bob Oddo. Needless to say, he was about as excited as can be. His team beat defending state Class AA champ Arlington—a team that had lost one game in two years—by a slim 1-0 margin. Stephen Reisert, a sophomore, was the hero. He was nearly at a [...]

TZ takes down Harrison

October
30

Hey guys I just completed a video report on the game I covered today. Apparently, the TZ players were fired up because I said Harrison could be this year’s version of Tappan Zee, meaning the Huskies flew under the radar all season and could be poised for a great postseason run. Good to know that [...]

And we’re off …

October
28

I covered the New Rochelle-North Rockland game and New Rochelle played a good one. The ‘good’ New Rochelle team showed up and not its alter ego. The Huguenots had plenty of quality chances and hit the crossbar twice, so the score could’ve been even more in their favor. Now, the real question is can they [...]

Shout out to Yo, Soccer fan and others who asked.

You wanted it so I am going to oblige. I wanted to wait to post this until we got as close to sectionals as possible and now we are here. So here goes.

Bracketology 101: Section 1 style

October
24

Byram Hills (Class A), Hastings (Class B), Valhalla (Class C), and Arlington (Class AA) each earned the top seed in their respective classes for the Section 1 tournament, which begins this weekend.

Think the people who follow Our Lady of Lourdes won’t be mad when they wake up and see the Warriors missing from the bracket? [...]

It’s North over North

October
23

Man, talk about a long day. I was up at 6 a.m. this morning for my trip back home from the deep south and it feels like I haven’t stopped since. Actually, I haven’t. As soon as this blog post is done, I’m outta here for the night so here goes.

Bryan Bentley and the Clarkstown [...]

First let me apologize to everyone for no posts in the last three days. I was enjoying a little time off, so that is why I have yet to respond to any comments directed toward me. I will get to them tomorrow. I promise. Hope you guys don’t hate me.

New Ro-White Plains, the remix

October
18

If you were driving along I-287 or the Hutch near where those two major Westchester arteries intersect about 5:30 ish today, those three news helicopters weren’t hovering around White Plains High School with the hopes of getting a little footage of the rival Tigers and Huguenots. Apparently, they were in fast pursuit of Joe Torre.

Too [...]

Let the debate begin

October

Nothing seems to spark more discussion on here than the weekly state rankings. So … drum roll, please. I present to you, the avid followers of the Just Kickin’ It blog, this week’s rankings as compiled by the New York State Sportswriters Association. And no, I have nothing to do with them.

Remember, these are [...]

And the winner is …

October
16

Byram Hills, come on down. The Bobcats are the latest winner in the “Poll is Right.”

OK, so I’m no Bob Barker or Drew Carey for that matter. But you guys made your voice heard with out Class A poll, which began on Sept. 25. I’d like to thank all 144 of you who voted. [...]

Here’s someone you should know about

October
14

I wrote my weekly notebook on a fine gentleman named Bob West. He was a fixture in this area well before my time, but as the first African-American coach at Nanuet, his legacy is something that transcends generations in my mind. Of the people I talked to, no one could say anything bad about him. [...]

Well, here you go. Remember, these rankings [...]

Jeff GoldJeff Gold reached the the soccer pinnacle when he was 7 years old. As the star of the Irvington Hurricanes, he led his team to a 13-0-2 record, scoring a goal in every game. Jeff didn't improve much and all of the others did. He only scored two goals as a varsity player, and one time, he was called Josh, so only one goal was official. Jeff worked at The Journal News for a year after graduating from Colgate University. He left for three years to work at Newsday, and returned to The Journal News in 2007. READ MORE
