Boys: Harrison exceeds expectations

November
19

If there’s one thing I learned about Harrison athletes during this playoff run, it’s that they all feel trapped under the shadow of football. Not just soccer either. I’d heard some rumblings in past years but it really came to light over the last few weeks. With each win, someone on Harrison would inevitably mention [...]

Boys: Bronxville is a first-time champ

November
18

Over the next couple of days I’ll look at each of the three local teams that made the state finals and what happened to them at Oneonta. Where else can I start but Bronxville, which captured the first state championship in school soccer history.

As far as coach Don Lucas is aware, it’s the only state [...]

Boys: Looking back at Oneonta

November
18

Oneonta and the Soccer Hall of Fame is in everyone’s rear view mirror. The winners are still celebrating in their corners of New York State. The losers are wondering what might have been with a break or two. Hopefully in a few days (maybe weeks, for some) even the kids who came up short will [...]

Boys: Bronxville wins, North Salem and Harrison fall

November
16

Well, I just polished off my final story of the day and I’m about to make the long drive from Oneonta to Queens. It’s been a busy weekend here at the Soccer Hall of Fame. Twenty of the best teams in the state, fifteen games. And, ultimately, five champions.

I was hoping for a banner year [...]

Boys: Championship game live updates

November
16

12:10 p.m.: Bronxville is up 1-0 on East Aurora in the Class B final with 17 minutes left in the game. Brian Rogers scored midway through the first half on a fluke play. The goalie hit him in the chest with a clear and then Rogers knocked the loose ball in.

Also, North Salem leads Red [...]

Boys: Major internet problems

November
15

Sorry everyone, the “hotel” I’m staying at is having major internet problems so I can’t be online for long. Let’s just say it ain’t the Ritz Carlton.

The essentials of semifinal Saturday are that Harrison won 2-0, Bronxville won 4-1, and North Salem won in penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie. All are moving on to [...]

Boys: Scouting the state semifinals

November
14

Sorry for the delay in getting this info out. I had some trouble reaching the Kenmore East coach.

Kenmore East (17-2-3), from the Buffalo suburb of Tonawanda, is the Section 6 Class A representative for the third time in four years. However, the Bulldogs have always failed to advance to Oneonta, having lost to Section 5 (Rochester [...]

Boys: State rankings

November
13

Sorry about the delay in the scouting reports. I’m still waiting to hear back from one upstate coach. To tide you  over, take a look at the latest state rankings.

Despite the overall success of Section 1, no Section 1 team is ranked No. 1 in its class. You’ll see that change when a couple of [...]

Boys: Expect all-section next week

November
12

The boys all-section team was already picked, but the selections are being kept in a vault by the powers that be. They won’t release them until the last Section 1 team is eliminated. That means Saturday night at the earliest. More likely early next week. I’ll post them as soon as I get them.

Boys: Salesian escapes with a championship

November
10

The CHSAA season wrapped with yesterday’s A and B-Division championship games at Adelphi. We almost had a local team in both but Iona Prep fell to city champ Molloy in the state semifinals. So only Salesian was representing the LoHud. The New Rochelle school was 18-0 heading into the B title game and had been, [...]

Boys: Three in Oneonta

November
8

Once again, LoHud teams have swept the opposition.

Three entered the state semifinals and three emerged victorious, all by multiple goals and all via the shutout. Harrison beat Owego (Section 4) 2-0 in Class A, Bronxville beat Cold Spring Harbor (Section 8 ) 4-0 in Class B, and North Salem beat Southold (Section 11) 2-0 in [...]

Boys: Latest state rankings

November
7

The state rankings are out and, for the most part, updated. This is the time of year when they’re most helpful. For example, North Salem fans know they have a big task ahead of them because Southold is respected enough to be No. 1 in the state.

Check out the rankings here.

Boys: Know thy enemy

November
7

I’ve been digging around for information on the the guys our local teams will be facing this weekend.

For a nice quick-hit summary of the four teams left in the CHSAA A-Division state playoffs, click here. The author, Dylan Butler, calls St. Anthony’s of Long Island the clear-cut favorite. St. Anthony’s is in the other semifinal [...]

Jeff GoldJeff Gold reached the the soccer pinnacle when he was 7 years old. As the star of the Irvington Hurricanes, he led his team to a 13-0-2 record, scoring a goal in every game. Jeff didn't improve much and all of the others did. He only scored two goals as a varsity player, and one time, he was called Josh, so only one goal was official. Jeff worked at The Journal News for a year after graduating from Colgate University. He left for three years to work at Newsday, and returned to The Journal News in 2007. READ MORE
