When it was all over, the sports staff had been reduced significantly. That has forced us to change the way we cover sports at the professional and local level. It was decided that we no longer have the manpower to assign individual beats as we did before. There are too many sports to cover and not enough reporters to do the job.

I was the boys soccer beat writer last season and the girls soccer beat writer before that. That is no longer the case. Like the other sports reporters, I am now a general assignment reporter who will cover all sports.

One of the effects of not having beat writers is that there is no one to maintain the blogs. Therefore this soccer blog is no longer active. All high school sports are now being consolidated into one blog, called Gameday Central. You can find it here. The posts on soccer will be clearly marked as such.

I spoke to Section 1 director Jen Simmons today and got the official boys leagues. Here they are.

Conference 1
League A: Arlington, Beacon, John Jay-East Fishkill, Lourdes, Poughkeepsie, Ketcham

Now that league schedules are no longer motivated by school size, you will see a lot of big schools beating up on little schools. Teams that would have gone 8-8 in a normal league against comparable schools might now go 5-11 because they have to play tougher, bigger competition.

Take Lourdes, which went 13-3-2 last year. It’s now got to play Arlington, Fishkill, and Ketcham a total of six times. Is that six losses right there? Could be.

To compensate, Section 1 lowered the standard for making the playoffs. Teams now only have to win 25% of their games to get in. Or 25% of their league games. Or 25% of their class games. Or 25% of games against their class and above. Basically every team is in the playoffs. It is almost impossible to not qualify at this point. I know the system is designed to help little schools that got shafted by the league alignments but jeez, do we really need 4-12 clubs in the playoffs?

How about 1-15 clubs? Could happen. Take Sleepy Hollow for example. Sleepy, a Class A team, plays just four games against Class A competition this season. Two vs Ardsley, one vs Eastchester, and one vs Pelham. That’s it. All Sleepy needs to do is win one of those games and it would be 1-3 (25%) against its own class, which is good enough to get in the playoffs. So yes, its possible to get a 1-15 team in the playoffs.

The other rule change for the playoffs regards seeding. The Harbin point system, which was used the last few years to determine seeding, is no more. Playoff teams are now given a point score at the end of the season according to the following stipulations.

-    Four points for every win, regardless of class
-    Two points for every tie, regardless of class
-    No deduction of points for losses
-    Two bonus points for playing a team who has a winning percentage of .750 or above; teams receive this if they win or lose
-    One bonus point for playing a team who has a winning percentage between .500 and .749; teams receive this if they win or lose

The latter two awards are given to reward teams that play tough schedules, even if they lose those games. So a 9-7 team that played three great (.750 or better) opponents and three good (.500-.749) opponents will be seeded higher than an 11-5 team that beat up on cupcakes.

For the purposes of awarding bonus points, opponent winning percentage is determined at season’s end, not when you play them.

So they threw all of Section 1 together and pulled out leagues based, for the most part, on who was close to one another, regardless of school size. Class AA Ossining is with Class B Croton. Class AA Gorton and Lincoln are with small Class B Woodlands. Poor Class C Valhalla is with Byram Hills, Rye, Harrison, and Port Chester. Yikes.

Here are the league alignments for girls soccer. I’m 99% sure these apply to boys soccer too but I haven’t gotten official confirmation yet. I’ll let you know when I do.

You’ll get your wish tomorrow. The preseason coaches meeting is tomorrow at 6:30. I plan to be there. There should be plenty to talk about then. One of the things I’ll tackle is the new league alignments, which are completely different than last year. So expect to see that at least, plus whatever else comes out of the meeting.

Readers should know that The Journal News is undergoing a lot of changes right now. Most of you are aware that the newspaper industry isn’t doing so well right now. The Journal News is no exception. We’ve had to make a lot of cutbacks over the last few months. Some of my colleagues and friends have lost their jobs. One of those was Jeff Gold, who covered girls soccer last year and was a contributor to this blog.

August has brought further change. We are still sorting through personnel issues today. Unfortunately this has brought us close to the school year. Normally at this time we would be talking to coaches and players, blogging regularly, and working on preview sections for the newspaper. Because of our restructuring, reporters have not been given those responsibilities yet because few are sure how it’s going to shake out.

This is why the blog has been quiet. I can’t even promise you that I’ll be the boys soccer beat writer this fall. I hope I am but there are no guarantees. I asked special permission to attend the preseason soccer meeting because it’s so important, but beyond that I make no promises.

The football blog has been active for a few reasons. First, because football starts practice earlier than the other sports. Second, because football writer Kevin Devaney is the one person in the department who can be sure what sport he will cover in the fall. Third, because like it or not football is top dog in this area. Football brings in more readers and has more interest than any other high school sport. Fans of other sports don’t like it but it’s true.

Please give us a little patience as we sort things out. Sports editor Susie Arth is committed to local sports and I know that as soon as things stabilize she will give soccer the attention it deserves. We will definitely have the situation sorted out before the fall season begins. Just bear with us and keep checking back. I’ll update you as soon as I have information about anything soccer-related.

North Salem’s Brian Span has committed to play at the University of Virginia on a full scholarship. UVA is one of the most successful programs in the most successful conference, the ACC, in the nation.

This comes on the heels of his being named to the U-15/16 East Conference squad by the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Only 44 players nationally were named Conference players. Joining him was Somers’ Taylor Washington, a rising junior at Rye Country Day.

The North Salem coach was named just that by NSCAA/adidas, and he was as shocked as anybody. He went to St. Louis as one of several people up for the honor. When they announced his name, he was frozen. You can read the full account here.

And you thought sports was a refuge from the perils of the new economy.

It seems this recession has gotten its tentacles into high school sports as well, prompting a drastic response from Section 1 schools. Starting in the fall, the leagues for most sports are expected to be completely reconfigured. Geography, not school size or team competitiveness, will be the overriding factor. That means you could be seeing current Class C programs like Haldane in a league with Class AA programs like Ossining, because they’re both on Route 9.

While the teams will still split into their proper classes for playoffs, get ready to see a lot more blowouts than before. Especially in sports like hockey and lacrosse, where power leagues have kept games close until now. Now you’ll be seeing developmental teams getting murdered twice a year by elite teams.

I’m sure no AD is crazy about the idea, but economic realities make it necessary. Budgets have to be cut. Gas and other travel expenses cost thousands of dollars a season. The new alignment will greatly reduce travel time and distance.

Just kidding Ron. Hendrie seemed legitimately surprised that he got this award. He already knew he was small schools coach of the year for New York State, but this is a big deal. Region II consists of NY, NJ, Pa, and De. There are only eight regions in the country. By winning this, Hendrie is eligible for national coach of the year.

One thing that wasn’t clear in the letter Hendrie got was whether this was a small-schools award or an overall award. I’m going to make a few calls and find out.

The three all-star (Westchester and Putnam)/all-county (Rockland) sections that we put out every year represent some of our most lavish work. Hundreds of hours of work go into them. They’re designed to celebrate the best athletes from the last season, in this case the fall season.

Each beat writer, along with the coaches in his or her sport, picks a first and second team, a coach of the year, and a player of the year. Then we in the office pool all those players of the year and debate which had the best year and should be Athlete of the Season. There’s one for Westchester/Putnam and one for Rockland.

I’m proud to say I won the debate for Westchester/Putnam this fall. Brian Rogers, Bronxville’s striker extraordinaire and my player of the year, gets the cover of the all-star section as Athlete of the Season. If you check out the all-star page here, you can see he’s got the big photo on top. I cracked up when I saw that his hair was all over the place again. Every photo we got of him all season had his hair flying around like a Chinese fan. Then he shows up for his all-star photo shoot with a new haircut, and I was like, “Aw, it’s too bad you won’t have interesting hair like usual.” Then somehow the photographer still manages to get him with his hair sticking up in the back. I don’t know how Brian does it.

Three local players—Brian Span of North Salem, Brian Rogers of Bronxville, and Greg Shaheen of Byram Hills—made the All-Region squad. Shaheen is the big surprise here since he kind of burst on the soccer scene out of nowhere. Only two sophomores made All-Region, and he’s one of them. Expect to see his name a lot the next couple years.

They didn’t allow a goal in the state playoffs until the last game. Ironically, that may have been their undoing. They admitted afterward that it flustered them to surrender one. Red Creek would add three more. Hey, Red Creek hasn’t won three titles in four years for nothing.

North Salem was also hurt by an inability to finish. It took 28 shots in the state semifinal without connecting on one. Even the two goals they scored in the final could have been more. They got away with it in the semifinal because Fabius-Pompey was playing super conservative and was never a threat to score. That game ended up in penalty kicks, as you can read here. North Salem nailed its first three kicks while Fabius missed its first two. Fabius managed to force a fifth kick, which Dan Loftus nailed for the win.

The ride ended the next day. Despite a Mike Cuzzi goal that put them up, Red Creek’s Ryan Fisher knotted the score with a free kick with six minutes left in the first half. Red Creek eventually went up 3-1. Brian Span cut it to 3-2 with eight minutes left but North Salem couldn’t find the equalizer before losing 4-2. You can read Matt Ng’s account here.

It makes sense. Harrison football is one of the greatest programs in Section 1. It’s won 10 sectional titles in 35 years, including five in the last 10 years. Two of those recent titles became state championships. Everyone who’s grown up in Harrison recently is well acquainted with Huskies football. Meanwhile, the rest of the athletic program pales in comparison. Including boys soccer.

So it was with extra pride that Harrison made it all the way to the state final. It was a very good team during the regular season, but regarded as behind Byram, Rye, Keio, Lourdes, and maybe Pearl River in Class A. To personally knock off three of those teams was a big deal. Consider that Rye beat Harrison in the regular season, Keio beat Harrison twice, and Byram was undefeated. After beating them, the Huskies beat Goshen and Owego to get to Oneonta.

Bryan Merlos and Andre Fonseca completely turned it on. Merlos had six goals and Fonseca had five goals and four assists in the playoffs. The defense, led by sweeper Makoto Sano, stepped it up big time. It picked up as many playoff shutouts as it had in the regular season (four).

Defensive midfielder Antonio Britto was huge in the state semifinal against Kenmore East. He shut down 20-goal scorer Casey Sheehan, just as he had shut down the best scorers on Owego and Goshen and especially Keio. Believe me, keeping Kaz Ikenaga off the board is no small thing. I wrote my story, which you can read here, about how Britto had happily sacrificed his offense, which he enjoys, to fill this role.

Merlos scored twice as Harrison advanced.

The final, as most of you know, wasn’t so happy. Harrison lost 4-0, and though the score was not indicative of anything, it was not a pleasant ending.

Seconds before halftime, with the Huskies down 1-0, Fonseca got tangled with an opponent. When he got up another Comsewogue player shoved him. A small skirmish ensued as the refs sent everybody back to their benches. They then issued a red card to Fonseca, ruling that he had kicked the original player as he was getting up, which is why he got pushed. Fonseca vehemently denied a kick, saying that he had just gotten tied up with the guy.

Unfortunately I didn’t see the play and can’t say for sure what happened. Our photographer got a couple photos of the incident. Not sure if you can determine anything but take a look and judge for yourself.

The red card forced Fonseca out of the game, not to be replaced. As Loughran aptly summarized, it’s tough to survive down a man against even an average team. Comsewogue was anything but average, and was already up 1-0. Harrison basically spent the first 20 minutes of the second half defending its own net. It couldn’t hold the dam forever, and gave up three late goals. The Huskies started arguing with the refs and picked up yellow cards. Clearly their focus was lost. Soon the game was too.

Hopefully they’ll be able to shake off that last ugly game and realize what a great feat it was to get where they got. And finally put a trophy next to all those football ones.

As far as coach Don Lucas is aware, it’s the only state title in school history in ANY sport besides cross country. The football team went to the finals a few years ago but lost.

Bronxville (23-1-1) made it look easy too. In seven playoff games they outscored opponents an incredible 28-2. And that’s with a first-round bye in sectionals where they probably would have won 6-0. One of the goals against came in the final minute against Rye Neck against the backup keeper when they were up 5-0. In the state semi they took a Chenango Forks team that let up two goals in six games and put up four on them.

At least Forks gave the Broncos their first taste of adversity. Forks tied the game at 1-1 in the second half. It was the latest they’d been tied in any postseason game to that point. So how did they respond? Ilya Dubinsky untied it two minutes later. A minute after that Brian Rogers made it 3-1. And within seven minutes of the tie, Chase Tarantino made it 4-1. For a team that wasn’t used to being threatened, they showed a surprising ability in both weekend games to respond to adversity. You can read Matt’s account of the semifinal here.

Bronxville was a better team than Forks, no question. I’m not sure you can definitely say the same about East Aurora, its undefeated (23-0) finals foe. East Aurora had a slight possession edge. Over the first 20 minutes it was a big edge. And yet it was Bronxville that went up. East Aurora’s attempted clear hit Rogers in the chest and bounded in the other direction. It couldn’t have been a better bounce for Rogers, who was the only one in the area. Allowed to line up a shot, the poor keeper had no chance.

East Aurora started pushing up late to get the tying score. They were keeping the ball well and I thought they might get a good shot or two off. But suddenly Rogers, the only Bronco not playing D, got a pass on a counterattack and was gone. East Aurora had one defender that was as fast as him; however that was not the kid who was chasing him (futiley). Once again Rogers was solo against the keeper. You don’t need me to tell you what happened.

Players piled on each other. Rogers and Leighton Welch, the other captain, rolled on the ground with joy. There was still a minute left but this one was over. You can read my full account here

And I don’t think I’m saying anything controversial when I say Section 1 was the best overall section in the state. We had more teams in Oneonta (4) than anyone else and more in the finals (3) than anyone else. Only Section 11, which is Suffolk County, can make an argument, because it had two champions. The sections were 1-1 in head-to-heads, with North Salem beating Southold in the Class C quarterfinals and Comsewogue beating Harrison in the Class A finals.

Oneonta was hopping this weekend (relative to Oneonta), and not just because of the games. Apparently it was something called “Soggy weekend” at SUNY Oneonta. Don’t ask me what it means. I just got the info from a friend who used to go there. Every hotel was booked. Fellow reporter Matt Ng and I were lucky to get a room at a sketchy little inn outside of town. Within three minutes of arriving we found out that A) Our reservation for two rooms would not be honored, B) The price that was quoted would not be honored, and C) The wireless internet that was promised didn’t actually exist. Fun.

So, sorry for the lack of blogging over the weekend. We did game updates as best we could through Matt’s Blackberry. Thanks to Matt for typing all that in his tiny little buttons.

Temperatures were warm on the first day, making for a surprisingly pleasant Saturday in upstate New York. Rain would come down suddenly at times but only lasted a couple minutes. Sunday was worse, as the temperature dropped 20 degrees. Suddenly the wind was biting. Plenty of players wore winter hats, which was too bad because it covered their amusing haircuts. I swear, every soccer team shows its solidarity through haircuts. The set of “The Road Warrior” didn’t have this many mohawks.

After every game they brought the teams into the Hall of Fame for a ceremony where the players got to pose on a balcony before friends and family. It was a nice setup. It brought a sense of closure for everybody.

I was hoping for a banner year for Section 1 with four teams making the trip. Never has the section had more than two champs in one year. Westchester’s never had more than one team. And it still doesn’t.

Only Bronxville got out of Oneonta alive. Harrison, Fishkill, and North Salem all came close but showed why it’s so hard to go all the way. There are some darn good teams out there. All four Section 1 clubs did their towns proud with the effort they showed.

I’m going to hit the road now so I can get out of this Holiday Inn bar (it’s the only place that has internet). Tonight or tomorrow I’ll be back with more breakdowns of each team’s road to the finals. If you have any final thoughts on what happened this weekend, leave them here.

Also, North Salem leads Red Creek 1-0 in the first half of the Class C final. Mike Cuzzi scored for the Tigers. Brian Span had the assist. It was scored 15 minutes into the game.

12:23 p.m.: Ryan Fisher scored for Red Creek on a free kick to tie the score 1-1 with six minutes left in the half. That’s the score now as North Salem and Red Creek enter halftime.

12:46 p.m.: Bronxville wins the Class B state championship 2-0 over East Aurora. For the Broncos, it is the first state championship in program history.

Rogers, a senior, scored the clincher on a breakaway with a minute to play. East Aurora was pushing out for the tying goal, and Rogers scored on the counterattack.

1:09 p.m.: North Salem now trails Red Creek 3-1 with 8:30 to play in the game. The Tigers need a rally.

Harrison should start its Class A final shortly.

1:11 p.m.: Well, well, well. Brian Span just scored with seven minutes left to cut the deficit to 3-2. North Salem has a chance…

1:19 p.m.: Well, folks, it’s over upstate. North Salem fought, but ultimately fell 4-2 to Red Creek in the Class C final.

Section 1 is 1 for 2 today. Harrison will try to make it 2 for 3.

2:15 p.m.: Not looking great for Harrison so far. Comsewogue has a lot of talent up front, and it shows. The Huskies almost got out of the first half scoreless, but with 4:35 to go Comsewogue went up 1-0. Josh Butzke’s shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and dropped in front where Keith Vigorito tapped it in.

2:45 p.m.: With 27 mins left in the second half, Comsewogue still holds a 1-0 lead. Their was collision near the end of the 1st half between Andres Fonseca and a Comsewogue player. Tempers flaired but no fighting but it looks as if Fonseca was given a Red or Yellow Card, which puts him out of the game, and leaves the Huskies a man down, playing with 10 on the field. More information about the incident will come in as soon as we get it.

2:50 p.m.: Comsewogue has added an insurance goal to make it 2-0 with only 20 minutes left. With only 10 on the field, Harrison is facing an uphill challenge to rally for two goals. They seem to be struggling just to get the ball out of their zone.

3:00 p.m.: Harrison is now down 3-0, Comsewogue just scored again, there is 12 mins left.

The essentials of semifinal Saturday are that Harrison won 2-0, Bronxville won 4-1, and North Salem won in penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie. All are moving on to tomorrow’s championships at 1:30 p.m., 11 a.m., and 11:40 a.m. respectively.

John Jay-East Fishkill lost 2-0.

Class A State Championship: Rye (17-4-1) vs. Section 8’s South Side (10-3-5), noon, Tompkins CC: It’s not surprise that Rye won Section 1, but the fact that the Garnets have made their way through the state tournament in such convincing fashion has been unexpected. This is a team that lost its regular season finale 2-0 to Eastchester. You can just sense the confidence that Rye has in every game. It goes in believing it’s going to win, believing it has the two best players on the field at all times in Lia Bellizzi and Alex Rimmer and a very talented supporting group that knows exactly how to play to its strenghts. It needs just one more win to complete this remarkable run. Going up against South Side is a very difficult task. It’s a power every year. South Side has won the last four state championships and its players grow up expecting to win state championships. Soccer is everything in that community. I used to work on Long Island and I know how
seriously they take it. But this isn’t a typical South Side team. Its best player, Crystal Dunn, is not playing in this game. Why? Because she’s part of the Under-17 national team. Those are the types of players that come out of South Side. The next best player is Carly Beyar. She isn’t expected to play either. I think Rye ends South Side’s run of state titles on a thrilling game.

Class B state championship: Briarcliff (22-1) vs. Section 5’s Livonia (16-5-3), 1 p.m. Homer High School: What else is there really to say about Briarcliff? You run out of superlatives. How a school the size of Briarcliff has so many talented players who will one day likely be playing college soccer is incredible. There are too many players that Briarcliff gets constant contributions from to have a team-wide letdown. The team is talented, driven, well-coached and committed to the cause. Briarcliff needs to keep close teabs on Amanda Kidder, who had two goals in the semifinals, but the Bears seem to relish those types of challenges. Livonia is obviously good. It’s in this game and it only lost to Briarcliff 1-0 last season in the state semifinals. But when this game ends, I just can’t see the scenario where the Briarcliff girls aren’t celebrating back-to-back titles. And then we can all get started on predicting three-peats…the whole team practically is
coming back.
