High school soccer in the Lower Hudson Valley

Jeff Gold

Jeff GoldJeff Gold reached the soccer pinnacle when he was 7 years old. As the star of the Irvington Hurricanes, he led his team to a 13-0-2 record, scoring a goal in every game. Jeff didn't improve much and all of the others did. He only scored two goals as a varsity player, and one time, he was called Josh, so only one goal was official. Jeff worked at The Journal News for a year after graduating from Colgate University. He left for three years to work at Newsday, and returned to The Journal News in 2007.

Girls: Final 4 preview

November
13

Let’s get right to it. Both games are state semifinals on Friday.

Class A

Rye (16-4-1) vs. Section 3’s Cortland (18-4-1), 11:45 a.m. at Tompkins CC in Dryden, NY: Cortland has the homefield advantage. To me, that’s immaterial however. It’s not like there are going to be thousands of fans standing outside in the cold temperature making [...]

Girls: Throw-ins and corners

November
9

Briarcliff might have a collection of the most talented players in the section. If it’s not first, it’s in the discussion. As it makes its way through what now is looking more and more like a possible second state title, it’s finding methods to score that are almost indefensible.

With good marking and anticipation, teams can [...]
