Boys: Hendrie wins regional coach of the year

December
20

Just got a call from North Salem coach Ron Hendrie. He received a missive, in writing, from NSCAA/adidas ordering him to inform the local media that he was named Region II coach of the year. Frankly I didn’t believe a word of it. Nobody likes to toot their own horn more than Ron Hendrie, so I’m pretty sure he made the whole thing up.

Just kidding Ron. Hendrie seemed legitimately surprised that he got this award. He already knew he was small schools coach of the year for New York State, but this is a big deal. Region II consists of NY, NJ, Pa, and De. There are only eight regions in the country. By winning this, Hendrie is eligible for national coach of the year.

One thing that wasn’t clear in the letter Hendrie got was whether this was a small-schools award or an overall award. I’m going to make a few calls and find out.

    Hey Jake-
Given your mention of the U18 team in the Brian Rogers article, I was surprised that his name was not on this list (http://www.ussoccer.com/articles/viewArticle.jsp_12025865.html). Any idea what happened?
    Thanks.

Mr. Hendrie is not only a fantastic soccer coach, he is also an incredible human being. A rare leader who expects the best from his athletes as well as himself. A true gentleman who will never speak negatively of another soul. A kind heart who despises days where he is forced to make ‘cuts’ as he is cognizant of the hard work all the players put in during the off season in order to make his team. He is a man who puts his family first, rightfully so, and always makes time for his friends. Words cannot describe how proud I am to call him a friend. He is first class on all levels- plain and simple. The North Salem school district needs to realize how lucky they are to have such an educator.
