Girls: All-Section teams
-
- November
- 10
Here are the teams. The picks were made by the coaches. These players are listed in no particular order. Don’t read into the order they are listed in any way shape or form. The players were never ranked. I am simply copying the list that was provided to me. The number of all-section selections was reduced from 143 last season to 74 this year so players should understand that it was MUCH tougher to be named all-section than last year. when will the boys selections be published? i thought the meeting happened a few weeks ago
when are you going to post the girls all-league team? i was told it was going to be determined the same night.
Why are there (Conference 3-All Section) 6 players selected for Briarcliff and only one, two or three from other schools? How does this work?
Of those 6 players selected for Briarcliff, why is KW not in the list? She’s the top goal scorer on the team. Surprising really.
I know that the Coaches all sit down with the other coaches in their conference and put up the players they think deserve it or would get it. The other coaches then vote on who should get it, and whichever one has the most votes receives the award. The coach of the player up for discussion does not get to vote on their won players and there are only a certain number of awards each conference receives, I’m guessing based on how many teams there are. The thing I am most upset with is that it went from 143 All-Section awards to 73. Only 73 awards for how many teams in Section 1? I think a lot of girls deserved a lot more than Honorable Mention and I think personally it’s a shame.
The number for All-Section and for All-Section Honorable mention was capped for each of the four conferences. Conference 1 had the most as they are primarily class AA, Conference 2, the next most as they are AA and A, Conf. 3 the third most because they are A and B and Conf. 4 the least amount because they are B and C schools. The numbers for each conference were pre-set and voting/determinations by conference coaches had to fit those numbers.
Should of put Lorena Aquino down…..From White Plains High School.
What a lovely way for the girls to find out that they made All-Section for the first time….on a blog. The boys coaches do not release the names until the season is over so that the players that are still playing can concentrate on states not individual awards. In addition, they are voted on by the coaches so logic would state that the coaches get to let the players know first. Must be great for the Rye and Briarcliff girls to see that they have won some individual awards while some of their teammates have not. That’s a really smart move to do that to those teams as they head up for states..
Good job releasing these the night after the meeting. I mean I’m sure that there are no mistakes or anything. That never happens. I’m also sure that you would not want to give the Coach of their respective team to at least have a moment with their players and tell them personally. I mean no one has school today due to Veterans day so Im sure those players wanted to hear about it from Jeff Gold. It’s also very classy to put it on a blog without thoroughly explaining the process either so that others outside the soccer world can comment on it.
You may want to mention that it was the Athletic Directors of Section One who decided to move the amount of awards down because last year, both soccer sections gave out awards to 20% of the players and felt to be an elite player, it should be closer to 10%.
Either way, this is not the way a high school girl should be notified about All-Section especially on a blog site where anyone can post a response without any repercussion. Once again, well done!
It was made absolutely clear with the necessary coordinators and coaching representatives that these selections were going to be put on the blog and there were no objections.
Also makes it tough on coaches that are thinking about states to have parents prod and question the selection process when the coach also needs to concentrate on the upcoming states. I know of a defender on Rye that completely shut down quite a few of the forwards on the all-conference list and every other forward that comes her way and she did not even get an honorable mention. This leads one to wonder about the politics and bias of the selection process itself.
wheres the boys all-section nominees?
Jeff…I did not say that you were not ALLOWED to post them. I was pointing out that it was stupid to post them. The coordinators you spoke to, I can guarantee, were not the coaches of the respective teams. You and Jake both forget that you are dealing with 15-16 year olds…not professional athletes. You guys forget that the coaches are teaching, coaching and instructing the student-athletes all the time. They are not supposed to be used for fodder or in this case, to increase readership on a blog. All I know is that if I were the Rye Coach or the Briarcliff Coach, I would now have to worry about the psyche of my team who is about to go up to states. They are good coaches and incredible athletes who I’m sure will persevere past the individual awards and congratulations to them…however, waiting until next Monday may have been the wiser choice.
Rex, the boys coaches are not releasing theirs until after the states are over.
Hey
I was just wondering if it was possible to fix my name…
it’s a typo,
it’s kelsey wise from flhs.
thank you!
Jake and I NEVER forget that we are covering high school athletes. Nothing could be further from the truth and it’s a statement without any merit whatsoever.
Don’t post the list and receive complaints, post the list and receive complaints. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I agree wtf? leave Jeff alone, are you people forgetting that he is..what for it….a sports reporter….and wait for it…its his job to post things like this…most of the players that are on this list already knew that they would be on this list, and congrats to those that are on the list or that were honorably mentioned. Jeff clearly knows that his is dealing with 15-17 year old girls, but you know what? most of them play at a very high level, this isn’t Rec. soccer.
Jeff,
Even though it may be too late. For exactly the reasons mentioned by ” what a disaster” can you remove this from the blog and put it back up on Sunday (and not put it in the paper until Sunday at the earliest also). PLEASE and much appreciated.
Everyone is ridiclosu Jeff leave this up its news would you take it down if it was pro sports its Jeff’s job to do this so leave him alone and let him to his job
Jeff, this was not a criticism, girls have a very different psyche to boys (duh!) and I just don’t think this is going to help either Briarcliff or Rye mentally prepare for states this weekend. All I was asking was to postpone the posting a few days.
Ryefan – I totally agree with you that “Greer” belongs on that list (as do Lucas, Talgo, McGowan, Chabot, Benincasa, McRedmond and probably several others)
You go girls!
Rye fans you dont see briarcliff fans complaining it doesnt affect anything a good team with good chemestry would not have a problem so if your garnets are really as good as you think there wont be a problem
Actually, it is not his job to post the list until after the All-Section banquet. These lists were never reported to the papers until the athletes were rewarded as their respective banquets. That is where it is supposed to be done and where it has always been done. And most of the players did not know, the meeting was last night. This should not have been posted until they did know from their respective coaches. Perhaps wait a day or so or until after the finals. Even Tim Lincecum and the rest of the professional baseball league waited until after the post season was over.
I understand that some wanted the news to wait and others didn’t. There were many requests that I received both on this blog and in personal emails to post it right away, so I did that, once I got clear permission from the necessary people.
Regarding Rye and Briarcliff and how this affects their chances in the upcoming weekend: These are two wonderful teams with mentally-tough players that are led by two of the finest high school coaches I have ever come across. The results of this weekend’s games are not related to a blog post informing players of the all-section team but rather their performance on the field.
As for professional sports, which frankly, has nothing to do with this: They all vary on when they announce awards. Baseball and hockey announce awards after the season; baseketball announces awards during the playoffs, and the NFL announces its Pro Bowl teams with two weeks left in the regular season. There is no standard.
Good luck to Rye and Briarcliff. Congratulations to all the players that made the all-section team.
Regarding the all-league picks, I’ll wait to post them until next week just so we can move on from this topic.
When will the boys selections be posted?
this is starting to get ridiculous, every post you or jake write always have controversy. Rod Boone is such a better sportswriter and HE NEEDS TO COME BACK NOW!!!!!!
Anyone who is criticizing jeff at all for this post is being completely irrational. There are 2 teams out of over 50 teams in section 1 who are still playing. Im sure the players of those teams couldnt care less if this was posted or not. They have 1 goal right now, knowing that they are all-section or not is not going to affect them in the slightest. If it does, that means they are a selfish player, because they have gotten this far and need to win 2 games to be state champions. To the other 48 team, every single player wanted to see this post. People are arguing that 96% of the players in the section should wait to see their honors just so the FANS and (probably rediculous and over-protective parents of rye and briarcliff who are posting these oppositions )and not the players themselves who couldnt care less. Stop attacking jeff, hes doing his job. Also, regarding the sectional seedings, would you rather he not post them because about 1/2 of the section didnt make the playoffs. He shouldn’t post them and let the coaches tell the teams who they are playing because a large number of the section didnt make it and it makes them feel bad? no, same situation, you are just being biased because you have a talented team, Everything doesnt go your way, These girls are playing at the state level, if they cant handle a little media, they have a really serious issue and shouldn’t be there.
Guest- That is completely true. A lot of players on this list were very happy and excited to see the awards they had earned. Especially since we have a lot of college showcases coming up and putting these awards up on our player profile so the college coaches can see them are a great help! If Rye and Briarcliff players cannot handle the fact that they got an award or they did not, they should not be playing on that field. A lot of the adults posting on here are acting irrational and completely immature and instead of writing on this blog you should be focusing your attention on your daughters and supporting them on their games coming up. Like I said if the girls blame their performance or lack of perseverance on these awards- their heart is not where it should be.
Thank you very much Jeff, I have gotten many congrats on the award and it only made the coach of the college that I am commited to happy to see I am being rewarded for my hard work! Good luck to Briarcliff and Rye!
boones still a better writer
Thank you Jeff, the parents need to “get over it” and stop trying to be monday morning quarterbacks. It is what it is move forward and stop the whinning.
