Boys: Championship predictions

November
1

The big day is upon us. Tomorrow is championship Saturday at Arlington High. We’ll be covering all four games, two of which I’ll be doing the story for. Let’s hope for as exciting a day as we had last year, when all four games were decided by one or zero goals.

It gets harder and harder to make predictions once the field gets this small. Everyone is so close. But I’ll forge ahead anyway.

Class AA

No. 6 Scarsdale vs No. 1 John Jay-East Fishkill: My belief throughout has been that if Fishkill got to this point, I would pick it to win no matter who it was playing. The Patriots played in a tough league, beat the section’s second-best team in Arlington, and never lost to anyone. Never. As we see from Byram’s slip at Harrison’s hands, that’s not an easy thing to do. But the way Scarsdale is playing, it’s impossible to dismiss them. Ten wins in a row. Six shutouts in a row. Eight shutouts in nine games. Outscoring opponents 35-3 over the last 10. The streaks are becoming staggering. And none of those games were against gimme opponents. The Raiders are playing as well as anyone right now. Especially considering that Fishkill’s playoff wins have been 2-0, 1-0, and 1-0. I may regret getting off the bandwagon at the last second, but I’m going to take Scarsdale in the upset. Scarsdale 1, John Jay-East Fishkill 0

Class A

No. 7 Keio vs No. 5 Harrison: The only final without a No. 1 seed could be the biggest tossup of the bunch. Keio beat Harrison twice this year, but both were in overtime. I’d use the NFL cliche that it’s tough to beat anyone three times in a season if I didn’t think it was a myth. Look at Scarsdale, which needed OT to fight off New Ro twice in the regular season, then smoked ‘em in the playoffs. Keio has as good a chance to win tomorrow as it did the first time. If you think Harrison’s going to be intimidated, though, think again. If the Huskies were going to fear anyone it was Rye, the only opponent to shut them out, and Byram Hills, which was undefeated. We all know how that turned out. The defense has stepped up to match, even exceed, what the offense was doing. I thought they’d need to put up at least two goals a game to win. Not so. I do think they’ll get a couple tomorrow. Andre Fonseca scores in overtime to hand Harrison a championship. Harrison 3, Keio 2, OT

Class B

No. 3 Rye Neck vs No. 1 Bronxville: Until this week Bronxville wasn’t just the top Class B team in Section 1, it was tops in the state. What knocked it down to fourth? A 2-1 loss to Rye Neck. So we know the Broncos can be beaten, and more specifically we know Rye Neck can do it. The Panthers have come a long way from going winless in the league two years in a row. There’s no one player on their roster close to what Bronxville has in Brian Rogers—in fact Rogers has almost as many goals (34) as their whole team (38)—yet they are here anyway. Cris Sanchez, who had both semifinal goals and scored in the Bronxville win, could be important. But you wonder of Bronxville will be denied. After losing the title game last year the Broncos were hungry to try again. Rogers is putting up numbers. Rodrigo Amboss is making his presence felt quite a bit. The window is wide open. I think they’ll jump through it. Bronxville 2, Rye Neck 0

Class C

No. 2 Valhalla vs No. 1 North Salem: Anticipating it as a possible finals preview, I watched these teams play in early September. North Salem won 3-1 in a game where both teams were still getting their feet wet. Brian Span stood out among the crowd, and we’ve continued to hear good things throughout the season. In retrospect the one goal Valhalla got was pretty good; in nine games against Class C teams North Salem let up all of two scores. Valhalla was short a couple players that day, in what would become a theme. It’s healthy now though, so you’ll see the best both teams have to offer. The Viking defense has been much better of late, allowing five shots on goal per game over the last five. And Paolo Luciano seems to be rising to the challenge in pressure games. Still, I tabbed North Salem a month ago as a candidate for a state title. North Salem 2, Valhalla 1

Jeff GoldJeff Gold reached the the soccer pinnacle when he was 7 years old. As the star of the Irvington Hurricanes, he led his team to a 13-0-2 record, scoring a goal in every game. Jeff didn't improve much and all of the others did. He only scored two goals as a varsity player, and one time, he was called Josh, so only one goal was official. Jeff worked at The Journal News for a year after graduating from Colgate University. He left for three years to work at Newsday, and returned to The Journal News in 2007. READ MORE
