Hard to believe, but I just watched New Rochelle get shut out. Scarsdale is absolutely rolling, having blanked five straight opponents. As a result, the No. 6 Raiders are back in the sectional finals. They demoralized No. 7 New Ro 3-0 today and will meet either Greeley or Fishkill in the Class AA championship.
UPDATE: 6:59 p.m. The results are coming in fast and furious. The Class C final is set after Valhalla beat Schechter 2-1 and North Salem beat Blind Brook 2-0. Valhalla got down 1-0 four minutes in, then moved a third player up to forward to come back. Paolo Luciano scored both Viking goals. Not much notable about North Salem’s win.
UPDATE: 7:06 p.m. At least one 7-seed is in the finals after Keio beat Hen Hud 4-2. Kazumasa Ikenaga scored twice. This result was expected by most. Keio has a chance to add a Class A title to its collection of Class C titles.
UPDATE: 7:12 p.m. Biggest upset of the day. Biggest upset of the playoffs. Could it be the biggest upset of the season? Byram Hills is out of the Class A playoffs after losing a shootout to Harrison. It came down to the last penalty kick, which Andres Prieto deflected off diving Byram goalie Jesse Stoopler. The shootout score was 4-3. I have no idea whether Stoopler played well in PKs or not, but it’s a fair question to wonder whether the injured Josh Weiner would have made a difference. As for the game itself, Harrison coach Pete Loughran said his teams controlled the midfield through most of regulation and overtime. He singled out Prieto and Ivan Cabrera. The win sets up a familiar matchup between Harrison and Keio, two excellent clubs, in the finals.
UPDATE: 7:21 p.m. Bronxville wins big again, 3-0 over Edgemont. The No. 1 seed in Class B has outscored its two opponents 9-0. Brian Rogers followed his hat trick with two more goals. We’re still waiting on the Rye Neck/Albertus result to know who it’ll meet in the final.
UPDATE: 7:40 p.m. There will be no Class AA finals rematch. Greeley fell to John Jay-East Fishkill 1-0 today despite 15 saves from Greg Waller. Fishkill, still undefeated, will take on Scarsdale and its shutout streak in nearby Arlington. You know the Raiders are disappointed that they won’t get payback.

Scarsdale played a great game today. I like to see Scarsdale win section 1. I do wish i cauld have gotten to see Arturo play one more time. Just wanna let Arturo know that he was the best play this year. I think he was the best player this year. If i was to rank all the players i section 1 by how i seen them play. Arturo would be my number 1. Also would have rogers and jp on that list. Well good luck to all the teams. still in it.

Harrison scored in the 1st half, Byram then tied it up in the 2nd with a header off a throw in. Both teams had chances to win in regulation and OT. Harrison had a goal called back in OT, but it was a legit call. Harrison GK made 2 saves during the PK round to get the win. Harrison was the better team today!

John Jay beat Greely 1 to 0 mostly because the Greely goalie played amazing making at least 3 unbelievable saves with pure athleticism.
The Harrison coach’s name is Pete Loughran, not John Naughton, where’d you pull that one out of Thomases? If coach of the year hasn’t been decided yet, he should definitely be a front-runner, seeing as he has invigorated the Harrison soccer program with his work ethic and dedication since moving up from JV to Varsity head coach in the fall of ‘05

Putting a little pressure on the BH GK? Dude, you have to hope the goalie makes a save, if you are real lucky 2 saves and a shooter misses the goal. He had an opportunity to make the 2nd save, but the shooter has the clear advantage in all PK’s.
Harrison is coached by Pete Loughran and they did have the better of the play today. Byram does play their system, which allows teams to maintain possession and when they win the ball they look to quickly counter. Byram is a threat when they go forward. Harrison has some real crafty players and when they play as a unit, clearly have shown they are a threat to any Class A team. Best of luck in the rematch against Keio

Jake, you seem to be constantly putting down hen hud. Maybe if you actually went out and saw one of their games you wouldnt be so negative. Those boys are a very talented group who always play really hard(both effort and physically) and were def a contender for a sectional title. I’m sure their battle with Beacon the night before playing Keio didn’t help any and i heard that 2 of keio’s goals came off PKs so its not like Hen Hud got dominated. Unreal how negative these blogs become because of the language used by Thomases. Instead of saying congratulations to the Byram team and the Hen Hud team, you question the results. Stoopler is a new keeper and played his ass off…you were not there and you throw in a little dig. You crush Hen Hud when they get to the semifinals…absolutely classless in realizing that these kids are teenagers. I hope they shut these blogs down in the near future as I know some of the coaches of Section One are completely pissed off about these blogs and the negative culture these blogs breed.
Anyway, the Byram game was a pleasure to watch. The game was evenly matched and personally I thought that Byram controlled the midfield but that the defense for Harrison played great in defending the transition. Good luck to the Huskies and Coach Loughran. Good luck to all teams and keep it positive. Congrats Byram on a season that no one expected..they still have not given up more than two goals in 3 years and lost four games in three years. Thats insane.

you played hard until the end, and even though none of us wanted to see the season end like this, you guys are and always will be one of the best teams to come through. You played your hearts out and you are truly an amazing team. Harrison- good luck in the rest of your season.
clearly josh weiner would have saved those shots…he is an AMAZING goalie and some sleepy hollow kid gave him a concussion so he couldnt play anymore. jesse stoopler did a great job stepping up to the plate though and had great saves. byram a hundred percent should have won they are a better team..just didnt seem to show today.
The semi final game between Greeley and JJEF was a great match, however, the officiating was horrendous. Out of three ref’s, one of them was clearly biased for JJ. The boys played great, evenly throughout and with respect for one another but one of the refs was absolutely horrible and should be banned from any other sporting event. I hope he reads this and he’s ashamed of himself. I’ve never seen such bad calls. Maybe Greeley wouldn’t have won anyway but it would have been nice to have a more evenly called match. Shame on you ref!!!!! Best of luck to JJEF in the finals. They truly deserve to be section champs.

As a player of Pelham, I’m just congratulating all the teams but especially Byram. With an exception to Jordan Pollack, that team has great class and really deserved to make it further than they did. Congrats on a great regular season record and best of luck to the rest of the teams and good luck to everyone especially Byram next year.
I find it interesting that when Greeley lost the first game to JJCR you guys covered it with an article, pictures and all this commentary about this intense rivalry. When Greeley went on to win the next game and then beat them in round 2 of sectionals, not one article and not one picture, just a little blurb. This is one of the most intense rivalries in high school, and you couldn’t give Greeley the respect it deserves. How pathetic is that. You made such a big deal,Jake, about Greeley losing that first game and the rivalry between the two teams and then you make absolutely no mention when Greeley takes the next two games. You don’t ever give Greeley the respect it deserves and everyone knows it. Pretty sad on your part, don’t you think?

Return of Boone….I’m not trying to take digs at anybody. My job is to evaluate these games. Sometimes that means asking questions and making observations. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t point out that Byram, which just lost its starting keeper, lost in a shootout session that’s centered around the keeper. Stoopler might have played fantastic; I don’t know. Which I clearly said. Nor would I be doing my job if my predictions said, “Team A is great. Team B is great. The end.” Hen Hud just didn’t have the quality wins this year that Keio, Byram, and Harrison did. Had the Sailors beaten Keio I would have lauded them to no end.
However, your accusations haven’t fallen on deaf ears. I’ll keep an eye on my sensitivity in the future. If you ever sense negativity in the blog, I hope you’ll contribute to making it more positive.

We love you guys – you play with more heart than any other team in the section and we’ll miss watching you. it was a good game, no doubt about it. it could have gone either way but hey pks are the worst way to end a game. byram will be back next year though, no doubt in my mind greg shaheen will be the best player in the section

byram and harrison was a good game. byrams style of play defintely gives opposing teams the bulk of possesion but then tries to counter. i have to say harrisons sweeper did a great job shutting down any counter attacks byram hills produced

i agree with devoted greeley fan, at the quarterfinal game White Plains vs. JJEF, the ref made a bad call that cost White Plains a berth in the semifinals, he gave a penalty out of nothing and gave jjef the pk, i dont know if it’s just me, but i think the referees help jjef a lot

soccer 101 – I’m not taking anything away from JJEF – they’re a great team but the refs totally sucked They called handballs when there weren’t any, they gave yellow cards when they weren’t deserved, they called every throw in for Greeley and gave it to JJ – it was the biggest joke. Even the JJ parents were looking a little embarrassed. It was like Friday Night Lights – what a disgrace. Glad someone else agrees. I hope someone sends this to the league – that guy should be thrown out – he should just let kids play the game of soccer.

Is it me, or do we all think the officiating is good or acceptable when we win, but terrible, or uneven when we tie or lose? Think about it….In every match there are good calls and missed calls, and sometimes bad calls. Its not like they’re pros.

Bronxville is very good, however their goalie is so lucky to have lleyton, their sweeper, infront of him. The goalie is garbage. Bronxvilles defense is what wins them games, not brian, not that player that they call a “goalie”. He was getting interviewed for some TV thing after the game, and that, i found was absolutely ridiculous. He sucks, give #12 some credit, good player

harrison has made it this far… they will deffinately make it to states… as for pelham… there just whack…. byrams defense had a major impact on todays game..
last year jjef beat scarsdale 6-2 in the regular season but then lost 2-0 in the playoffs… jjef definitely had more talent last year, but that didnt stop scarsdale from pounding them in the playoffs. same goes for this year. JJEF can have all the skills in the world, but that wont stop scarsdale. it will definitely be a hard fought game and i would not be surprised either way.

Rye Neck beat Magnus 2-1 on two goals from Christian Sanchez. Both apparently were beautiful free kicks….hope someone taped the game.
Scarsdale will win the whole thing. As long as they want it. They can not relax at all. #’s – 17,22,14,15&GK are key players that can not be taken lightly. I have not seen JJEF play but the Raiders are focused will shut them down. They shut down the highest scoring team in the league and will do the same on Saturday. Go Raiders!!!!

I think some mention should be made how the southern westchester teams have really picked it up the last few years in AA. In the early 2000’s and the late 1990’s, the top class whether it be A or recently AA has been dominated by the northern teams like Arlington, JJEF, Ketcham, Suffern etc. Hats off to Coach Oddo of Greeley and Cipriano of scarsdale for building real competitve programs. For Scarsdale, back to back AA finals is incredibly impressive. It’s too bad Greeley won’t be there to meet you for a rematch of an incredible final from last year. Good Luck Adam Rose. Avenge your PK miss.
byram is nasty, dont get me wrong. but all you need is an amazing pair of defenders makato ” mak daddy ” sano, and antonio britto shut down greg shaheen, pat v got laid out by andre fonseca. and they were supposed to have a major impact on the game, meanwhile, a beautiful ball by fonseca, to merlos found the net for a legitamet goal, when pat couldnt find shaheen,they relied on a cheap throw in goal, only used by americans and people who have to play on a counter attack. when andres made the last penalty kick. we found out who the best duop in section one is. Fonseca and Merlos.

Definitely agree that these blogs get out of hand. Thanks to those who supported the Hen Hud players and all of the other smaller schools/teams that tend to get overlooked by the Journal News because they only focus on returning contendors and the big schools. The Keio / Hen Hud game could have gone either way. Both teams played with heart but unfortunately it wasn’t Hen Huds best performance of the season. Although I have to say I was pleasantly suprised that the refereeing was pretty good. My issue is that I don’t think the Journal News has covered ONE of their games in an 18 game + season including sectionals so what respect do they and other teams like them get. Best of luck to those teams left in the playoffs.
antonio britto did a good job on shaheen, he couldn’t get any shots off, but he still generated alot of chances for other players, which is a sign of a very good player

Their is no doubt in my mind that he is the best Goalie in Section 1. He learned from the best last years section 1 goalie of the year,Dan Thau. Next year we will see Scarsdale in the Sectional Finals and beat them one again.

It was a great season we proved every 1 wrong !!!!!!!

next year is our year. well have almost evry1 returnin but thhe three key players cocoy francisco nd puppy, but we can do it. We proved we can. No1 expected us to be in semiss but we did. We were 80 mins away from finals like coach said nd hope next year we can close the deal. It was my pleasure to be a starter for diz years varsity team, nd to play along side cocoy nd francisco two great players. nd to all of the rest of the huguenots, it was a fun year nd next year we’ll make it even more special. We just couldnt beat scarsdale nd my respect to them, we had the chance to take da game that counted the most but we culdnt finish da deal. so once again thanks nd proud to be a part of the 08 new roo varsity team.
