Boys: Akeeba Marshall lifts Mount Vernon

September
25

Girls writer Jeff covered a boys game yesterday—Carmel vs Mount Vernon. You can read his gamer here.

Haven’t seen either of these teams personally so I’ll let Jeff tell the story. This Akeeba Marshall kid must be good. Joe Cipriano, the Scarsdale coach, was talking him up the other day. Then Jeff texts me yesterday at 5:30: “this kid on mt. vernon is really good :) ” Maybe there was no smily face but the rest is true.

Boys: How’d Mahopac pull that off?

September
25

Score du jour: Arlington 1, Mahopac 1. So let me get this straight. Arlington is 6-0 with wins against White Plains, Scarsdale, and defending STATE champion Vestal. Mahopac is 4-4 with wins over Saunders, Ramapo, Lincoln, and Class C North Salem. Shouldn’t that be completely one-sided? The Indians stunned a lot of people with this tie. Props to Brendan Synan (11 saves) for toughing out 60 minutes in net after halftime without a mistake. John Jay-East Fishkill is pleased as punch, as it now has a leg up in the race for the No. 1 seed.

Player of the day: Hiroki Kobayashi, Scarsdale. When Scarsdale was awarded a penalty kick with a chance to beat undefeated New Rochelle in double-OT, who else was going to take the kick? It could only have been Kobayashi, whose two scores even got the Raiders into the extra session. He converted, handing them a huge league win in enemy territory.

Nyack 2, Tappan Zee 1: At Tappan Zee, Will Fleming and Alex Hahn scored for the Indians. Teammate Aiden Doyle had 12 saves. Danny Kane scored for the Dutchmen.

Horace Greeley 2, Somers 1: At Greeley, Stephen Reisert scored two goals, including the tiebreaker in the second half. Dylan Howie scored for Somers.

White Plains 2, Mamaroneck 0: At White Plains, J.P. Arenas and Michell Alex Lopez scored. White Plains allowed just two shots on goal. David Benudis made seven saves for Mamaroneck. Each team came into the game with just one loss.

John Jay 4, Yorktown 0: At John Jay, Ian De Ruiter had a hat trick. John Ranagan made 11 saves for the Cornhuskers.

Girls: Fantastic games on Tuesday

September
24

Strike Somers from the list of unbeatens, something I wrote about on Sunday.

We’re now down to Nanuet (8-0), Bronxville (8-0-1), Rye Neck (6-0) and Harvey (2-0).

It took an amazing win by Greeley, 2-1, to beat the Tuskers. In that game, Sophia Orlander scored the winner with 20 seconds left. She had already assisted on Natalie Rosen’s goal that tied the score with 22 minutes left.

This can’t be considered a real upset despite Somers’ previously unbeaten status. Greeley is the defending AA champ. and a team expected to contend for another title.

Since losing its opener 1-0 to John Jay, Greeley has been playing phenomenally well. In fact, the goal it gave up to Somers, now 5-1-2 on the season, on Tuesday was the first goal it gave up since that John Jay loss. Greeley has outscored opponents 23-2 on the season.

And how about the incredible ending to the Suffern-Clarkstown North game, a 2-1 overtime win by Clarkstown north, thanks to Jenn Denicola’s goal with one minute left in the second overtime. The game went to overtime only after Clarkstown North’s Evelyn Nicinski tied the game with a minute left in regulation.

After a rough 0-3 start, which included being outscored 13-1 in its first two games, Suffern has won three in a row. Clarkstown North, on the other hand, has struggled a bit of late, losing its last three after starting the year 2-1-1 through four games.

Last, what a win by White Plains to defeat Mamaroneck 1-0 on a goal by Julia Puff. White Plains has now won four of its last five and Mamaroneck surprisingly has lost two straight after falling to Mahopac on Saturday. The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Mamaroneck. It has games against Ursuline, North Rockland and John Jay-EF coming up.

Boys: Confusion in Rockland AA and more Tuesday results

September
23

Score du jour: Clarkstown South 2, North Rockland 1. What’s up with Rockland AA? Suffern and North, supposedly the two best teams, are really scuffling with a combined 5-11 record. Clarkstown South had a losing record too, and its only wins were against Yonkers teams. That left North Rockland as the only winning team. Then this loss. Johann Schmidt and Michael Perez scored to further muddy the Rockland waters.

Player of the day: Nico Chavez, Briarcliff. The last of Chavez’s three goals came with 10 minutes left in a 4-3 win over Kennedy.

Westlake 4, Putnam Valley 2: At Westlake, Andres Cordero had a hat trick. Mike Belloli added a goal. Obed Noguera and Alex Spitzer scored for Putnam Valley.
Briarcliff 4, Kennedy 3:  At Kennedy, Nico Chavez scored his third goal of the game with about 10 minutes left in the game off of an assist by Ben Halper to win the game for the Bears. Luis Gonzalez scored twice for the Gaels.
North Salem 5, Solomon Schechter 0: At North Salem, Brian Span scored two goals. Nicholas Crose and Geoffrey Semmens combined for six saves in the shutout. Robby Markowitz and Josh Grafman (four saves) split time in net and combined for seven saves for the Lions.
Albertus Magnus 1, Pearl River 0: At Pearl River, Brendan Cummings scored with five minutes left in the first half. Michael Lincoln had the assist. Graham Fortunato had seven saves for the Pirates.

Boys: Fox Lane forced to forfeit games

September
23

Fox Lane has forfeited its first three games due to an ineligible player, according to athletic director Beth Staropoli and Section 1 chairperson Jennifer Simmons.

Fox Lane reported voluntarily to the Section 1 office that it had carried an ineligible player. The penalty was the forfeiture of all games that player had participated in. Two victories—over Spring Valley and Hen Hud—therefore became forfeit losses. Fox Lane’s record drops from 3-2 to 1-4. Neither was a league game.

Neither Staropoli or Simmons would say who the player was or what the infraction was.

All games going forward will count as normal.

Boys: Top 10

September
23

1. John Jay-East Fishkill (8-0): Not being able to see Fishkill or Arlington because they’re out of our newspaper’s coverage area, it’s hard for me to say with confidence which of them is better. I’ve asked around a little bit and the general feeling is that the Patriots are slightly more dangerous.

2. Arlington (6-0): You could argue that Arlington is the boss of Section 1, and certainly Dutchess County, until proven otherwise. Which is fine. The great thing is that the top two teams will square off twice, so we only need to speculate for so long before they decide who’s better on the field. The first meeting is next Thursday. You could be looking at 11-0 vs. 9-0.

tjndc5-5lw19c6s6u8h4rfs5po_layout.jpg

3. Scarsdale (5-2): No other club on this list has two losses. So why is Scarsdale this high? Becasue those losses were to the teams ranked 1 and 2. The Raiders were actually leading Arlington on goals by Adam Rose and Kevin Towle before allowing three straight goals. The dropoff on this list between the top two and the bottom eight is big until someone from the LoHud steps up to challenge the Dutchess powers.

4. Horace Greeley (6-0): Dan Thau? Who’s Dan Thau? Greeley’s area of greatest worry has become a strength as Greg Waller has done an excellent job in place of all-star goalie Thau. Since giving up two goals in the opener to Ossining Waller has four shutouts in five games. Overall his goals-against is 0.55 and his save percentage is 92.7.

5. White Plains (4-1-1): A tie with Mamaroneck knocked the Tigers down from No. 3, where I would have had them if I made this list three days ago. They get a chance to pay back that affront when Mamaroneck comes to them tomorrow. What we’re all looking forward to, of course, is the two meetings with Scarsdale.

6. Byram Hills (4-0): Get this, Byram is 42-0-1 in its last 43 games versus sectional competition. Give Rye credit for forcing a tie last year, which ended up being the only smudge on Byram’s sectional record. Oh, and the one loss to anyone last year was quickly avenged on Friday when the Bobcats slapped around Smack ‘n Kill, er, Spackenkill, 4-0.

7. Ossining (6-1): Make it six wins and counting since opening day’s 3-2 loss to Greeley. Mike Da Fonte’s winner against Port Chester provided the best win so far. You have to like Ossining in all its upcoming league games, at least until it sees Lourdes twice in the last three games of the year.

8. Mamaroneck (4-1-1): Mamaroneck hasn’t scored much — just 12 goals in five games. It makes you worry a little about their staying power. Obviously it didn’t hurt them against White Plains. If the Tigers play D like that every game, fine, they’ll be on this list for weeks to come.

9. New Rochelle (8-0): Right now it’s hard to know where to rank this team. The record is obviously gaudy. But the schedule has been Downy soft. A 2-1 win over North Rockland and 5-4 win over Mahopac were the only gatjndc5-5lsymmlowet6lrnf7d5_layout.jpgmes you can take seriously. And even the players and coaches were lukewarm about themselves. Hey, you beat who’s in front of you, which they’ve done, so I couldn’t slight them too much. Do something against Scarsdale and White Plains this week and we’ll talk about moving up.

10. Iona Prep (3-1): All four of Iona’s games have been decided by one goal. Meaning a couple of bounces one way or the other and its record could be different. Give the Gaels and Oscar Deleon credit for beating defending CHSAA champ Fordham Prep and hanging in against St. Francis Prep.

Boys: More from Scarsdale

September
22

Scarsdale is back on track after a surprisingly big 4-0 win over Suffern.

Though its two losses were very excusable — to Arlington and Fishkill — it played shaky in Saturday’s win over Clarkstown North. The Raiders fell behind two minutes in on a PK, then pressed and pressed and pressed, threw sloppy passes left and right, before eventually escaping with a 2-1 win.

tjndc5-5lw19cqzpjnng9nj5po_layout.jpg

So they weren’t happy about that nervous mindset. Things were much better today. They possessed the ball well, made smart passes. They weren’t flying up the field but maintained good control. For whatever reason (no one could say why) they felt more relaxed from the get-go, and it manifested itself in their play.

Didn’t hurt that Santiago Rigby (pictured left) and Michael Abraham netted goals three minutes apart in the first half. Leading by that 2-0 score, Scarsdale coach Joseph Cipriano went to his bench when there were still 27 minutes left. He even switched out starting goalie Daniel Kelly. That’s a lot of confidence to show in the reserves.

The coach shouted to them to just play defense, to not worry about scoring. Two minutes later they scored. Arthur White, a backup forward, picked up his first two goals of the year. The guy was pretty slick, especially with his dreads flying around behind him. Could start for a lot of teams.

Boys: Scarsdale squashes Suffern

September
22

e_3half_surprised.jpg

Very surprising result from Scarsdale, where the Raiders beat Suffern 4-0.

From Suffern coach Bob Walkley: “Look, Scarsdale’s a good team. But we’re not four goals (worse).”

I agree. Which made this a curious score. It prompted a loooong heart-to-heart by the Mounties afterward where they talked about pride and effort.

I’ll be back in a bit with more commentary, as well as the Top 10 and results from a very busy Monday.

Girls: Pelham-Edgemont from Saturday

September
22

This game wasn’t called in initally, but it went down to the wire.

Pelham beat Edgemont 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Laura Davis with eight minutes left.

Three of Pelham’s next four games are against Eastchester, Byam Hills and Rye. Should be telling about where Pelham stands within Class A.

Girls: Kahn is on quite the pace

September
21

Nanuet’s Lauren Kahn, the area’s leading goal scorer (17 ) and points leader (38) is on pace to put up almost unfathomable numbers right now.

If you project her up-to-date 17 goals in seven games out to a 17-game regular season, that puts her with 41 goals. Considering that Nanuet is one of the strongest teams in the area, a prolonged postseason run is definitely possible.

Could Kahn have a 50-goal season?

Last year’s leading scorer, Amy Marron, had 34 goals, in 17 total games. Marron, by the way, has 10 goals in five games thus far this season.

The other players to be averaging at least two goals per game thus far are Rye Neck’s Jodi Rosenzweig (12 goals, 5 games)  Rosina Calisto (11 goals, 5 games) and Lona Speidell (9 goals, 4 games),  Solomon Schechter’s Naomi Pollack (11 goals, 4 games), Briarcliff’s Katie Weiner (11 goals, 4 games) and Nyack’s Mary Gray (6 goals, 3 games).

As for assists, Schechter’s Julia Wein (12 assists, 4 games),  Westlake’s Brittany Connick (5 assists, 2 games) and Rye Neck’s Samantha Amatuzzo (10 assists, 5 games) are the three area players averaging two or more helpers.

Girls: The unbeatens

September
21

Based on results reported to The Journal News through Sat., these are the remaining undefeated teams in the area:

Nanuet 7-0

Bronxville 7-0-1

Rye Neck 5-0

Somers 5-0-2

Harvey 2-0

Interestingly enough, Bronxville and Rye Neck are in the same league and will place twice, first on Oct. 10 and then again on Oct. 20.

Which of these five teams has the best chance for an undefeated season?

Girls: Byram Hills-Hackley

September
21

Not sure why the results of Hackley’s 2-0 win over Byram Hills didn’t make it in. My understanding is that it was a great game, so that’s a shame.

Hackley’s goals were scored by Julie Dreyfuss, the other by Brianna Millette and goalie Jocelyn Remmert made 22 saves.

Byram Hills coach Bryan Horn told me that over 300 people were at the game and that it was a very high quality game.

I think as good as Hackely has always been—remember this is a team that was76-1-1 over its last four teams—there’s always some question about how it would fare playing against a Section 1 schedule, especially against the better teams.

Well, Bryam Hills is one of those teams, so this sheds some light. It’s only one game, but it certainly has to have some impact on the way people view the the program.

Kudos to both Hackley and Byram Hills for scheduling this game. I wish there were more like it.
