Boys: Top 10 for 9/29
-
- September
- 29
1. John Jay-East Fishkill (9-0): One of the Big Two will finally take a loss on Thursday after they meet at Arlington. Unless it’s a tie. Which nobody wants. Let’s get a clear No. 1 here!
2. Arlington (7-0-1): At least we know Arlington’s not going to be perfect. Has there been a bigger surprise this season than Mahopac forging a tie with the Admirals? Ian Tenzer put Mahopac on the board and keeper Brendan Synan made it stand for 100 minutes in the 1-1 tie.
3. Scarsdale (6-2): The threat of big weekend rain (which never materialized) wiped out a lot of games and made it a light week for several teams. Scarsdale played only once, though it was a big one. The Raiders needed two overtimes but were able to hand New Rochelle its first loss thanks to three goals by Hiroki Kobayashi. New Ro actually doubled Scarsdale’s shots on net but only got two past Daniel Kelly.
4. Horace Greeley (7-0): Another team that played only once last week. A 2-1 win over Somers kept the Quakers on track for an undefeated regular season. I detailed the possibility of that in Sunday’s notebook. I see it hinging on Thursday’s game at John Jay, which still has one loss. It was good to see Stephen Reisert coming up with two goals against Somers.
5. White Plains (6-1-1): Two days after New Ro lost its first, White Plains gave the Huguenots another 3-2 defeat. That was the blow that nearly knocked them off this list. White Plains did force Mamaroneck off by shutting Mamaroneck out in their rematch. For now White Plains doesn’t move up because none of the teams ahead of it lost. But that would change with a Thursday win.
6. Byram Hills (7-0): On Friday the Bobcats got to watch three of their former teammates go at it in college soccer. Hayden Morris’s Seton Hall team beat Villanova, which features Will Ogden and Stephen Paresi, in overtime. Morris and Ogden were The Journal News players of the year in 2006 and 2007. None factored in the winning score. The game was seen on Villanova’s website, which streams the game broadcasts.
7. Ossining (8-1): Joe Scamarone has been very equitable about platooning goaltenders Fabio Hernandez and Jeff Worden. They’ve pretty much flipped game to game. Worden is pitching a shutout so far, while Hernandez has allowed six goals. In fairness to Hernandez, three were to Greeley.
8. Iona Prep (5-1): The Gaels are starting to put people away. They scored three in each of their last two games. Leading scorer Shane Carthy still only has three goals total, which has to be the lowest among top teams. Certainly the lowest among teams on this list.
9. John Jay (5-1-2): The Indians have been very different at home than on the road. In fact they just got their first road win on Friday. Lucky for them, Thursday’s clash with Greeley is on the roadside turf at Cross River.
10. New Rochelle (8-2): I debated between New Ro, Rye, and Mamaroneck for the last spot. Ultimately I gave it to the Huguenots despite their 0-2 week. Frankly I thought they’d lose by bigger margins to White Plains and Scarsdale. The fact that both were 3-2 games, including one in overtime, means New Rochelle is more competitive than some thought. Including, obviously, myself.

Iona now 6-1, beat Regis 2-1

Great job on the boys soccer blog. Any idea when we’ll see a girls Top 10?
How does Greeley remain below Scarsdale? As that picture should indicate, Greeley beat Scarsdale in the Sectional Final last year…
EUGHHHHHHH
I am a bit confused as to how a state champ, and year before that, state finalist, who is still undefeated, is only at 6th. I know that Byram is only a class A school but they also tied arlington in a scrimmage early this fall and have only let in one goal during the year. That alone has to speak for a better ranking than 6th.
how is Greeley number 4 they beat the 3 and 4 teams last year they should be number 2
how is Greeley number 4 they beat the 3 and 2 teams last year they should be number 2
If you people don’t realize, teams change from year to year. Just because Greeley beat Scarsdale last year doesn’t mean that they are better than them this year. Byram hills is another case, just because they were in the state chapionship game, doesnt mean they should be automatic first, they have to prove themself after the lost alot of key players. I actually agree with the rankings and feel as though Jake has been doing a very good job this year with the blog.
Is 7-0 and giving up one goal not good enough for you? Not to mention that Byram they drew arlington. Of course a name DOES matter. Look at how college does their rankings or even how fifa does their own. The results of the LAST world cup factor in for 4 years! A name holds a lot of weight as do past results, including, last season and the season before that. Also, look at the NSCAA and New York Sports Writers rankings. In the NSCAA rankings Byram is 15th, 2 behind Arlington. I am talking about the entire state, private schools, public schools, small schools and large schools. 15th! Yet, somehow, they sit below Scarsdale and White Plains in the rankings here…odd. Oh, and they are number 1 in the state in class A.
Soccer expert took the words out of my mouth. Teams change year to year. If Greeley returned the exact same group that beat Arlington and Scarsdale then OBVIOUSLY it would be ranked higher. It’s not the same, so the accomplishments of the past reset. Let’s also admit, Greeley and Byram fans, that your teams haven’t faced the day-in-day-out competition that White Plains and Scarsdale have. Not yet anyway. I want to see Byram beat Pelham and Rye and Greeley beat John Jay before they move up.
And to OC10 and the others who have brought up Greeley’s scrimmage win over Arlington, I will say that scrimmages count for almost nothing in my mind. Maybe as a tiebreaker if everything else is even. To better illustrate my feelings on this subject, allow me to introduce Allen Iverson for a brief statement.
“I mean listen, we’re sitting here talking about a scrimmage, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we’re talking about a scrimmage. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it’s my last but we’re talking about a scrimmage man. How silly is that? ... Now I know that I’m supposed to lead by example and all that but I’m not shoving that aside like it don’t mean anything. I know it’s important, I honestly do but we’re talking about a scrimmage. We’re talking about a scrimmage man. We’re talking about a scrimmage. We’re talking about a scrimmage. We’re not talking about the game. We’re talking about a scrimmage. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you’ve seen me play right, you’ve seen me give everything I’ve got, but we’re talking about a scrimmage right now. ... Hey I hear you, it’s funny to me too, hey it’s strange to me too but we’re talking about a scrimmage man, we’re not even talking about the game, when it actually matters, we’re talking about a scrimmage.”
Thanks Allen.
Wow!! this is very interesting. I think you guys are just so funny. “we are talking about a scrimmage” Well for New Rochelle I think you have placed them in a good position. Both Scarsdale and White Plains were very close. They just ended up on the wrong side of the score card after the final whistle. When they play them again I am certain it is going to be the kind of outcome that sends both teams (Scarsdale and White Plains) tumbling down the rankings.
penis. That’s all just penis
Thanks Jake for backing me up again. OC10, yes in college teams are ranked based on last years performance because that is all there is to go on. But almost a month into the season, how last years team did doesnt even cross the mind of the people that rank the teams. Big matchup today between Greeley and JJ, if greeley gets the win, I dont see them moving ahead of Scarsdale in the rankings yet, but if JJ wins, I see them moving ahead of Iona Prep but not infront of Ossining since I believe they will end up with a top 5 seed when it comes to the playoffs.
Maybe X should have been at the game. The WP-NewRo match should have finished 3-0, if not for some sleepwalking in the final 5 minutes by WP where they pretty much gave away 2 goals. Well, the 1st one at least. The 2nd was a nice set piece on New Ro’s part in the final minute.
I hate to break the news to you WPfan, but the game is played at this level for 80 minutes. Just because you are ahead with 5 minutes left in the game doesn’t mean you have won. The two goals that New Ro scored were well earned. They actually should have scored more. The first goal by WP was nice, off the corner kick. But the last two were gifts from New Ro. I doubt that when they meet again, New Ro will as generous. That was not New Ro’s best performance. Its great that they play twice. We will see the next time around. New Ro played short of several starters, but that is not an excuse, the fact is that they will rise above their previous performance and deliver a “W” against a quality side.
Hi there, I found your blog via Google while searching for penis enlargement methods to get a bigger penis and your post looks very interesting for me.
