Picking The Journal News all-stars

It’s been an insanely busy couple of weeks. You’d think the break between sport seasons would be down time at the paper, but it’s actually our busiest time of year. As soon as the fall season ends we start putting together our winter previews. There’s a massive one for basketball where we get player information from every single boys and girls basketball coach in the LoHud. There’s also smaller ones for hockey, swimming, wrestling, track, bowling, skiing, gymnastics. And, starting this year, cheerleading is a varsity sport. So that needs a preview too.
At the same time we have to pick our all-stars for fall sports. A lot of thought goes into these picks because we know how seriously some kids take them. We produce a massive all-star section for every fall sport that comes out Sunday, Dec. 9.
With the help of some observant coaches I chose the girls soccer all-stars, which are basically the top 11 players on either side of the river. Rockland gets its own top 11, and Westchester/Putnam gets its. There’s also an all-star second team and an honorable mention list. Some of the selections are obvious. Some are agonizing. There’s always one or two kids you wish you had extra spots for. I just hope the ones who make our short list realize how much we respect their game to put them on there.
Josh Thomson, another reporter, made the final decisions for the boys team. Because Rod handled boys soccer for most of the year, Josh was put in a tough spot when he was given this duty. But I know he leaned heavily on the coaches and got a lot of recommendations from Rod. I bet his choices reflect the section’s consensus very closely.

Will the all star section even have pictures of the winning soccer teams (boys and girls) or will it just show us more football pics? The Journal News’ lack of photo coverage at the state championship soccer games is appalling! Yet, there are sooo many of Dobbs and Rye football….
You have a cheerleading preview? Wow…that will be such an exciting read! I am not sure if I can wait until December 6th for that. Gee, I hope there will be a nice cheerleading blog as well.
Can you reveal to this blog the all-star selections or do we all have to wait until dec. 9?
lukas wear is the best player in section 1, u dont need to score 30 goals to be amazing, he’s an amazin defender who shut down everyone and was a huge part of why JJCR had one of the best defenses in the section, if not the best
i disagree, will ogden was the best player in section 1.. he took the team to states, even without the great hayden morris…
if i could pick 3 standout defenders i’d pick lukas wear from jj, allen mata from yorktown, and bucky illingworth from jj
i know and realize that all three of these boys were from the same league but all three of them deserve to be all-stars.. lukas wear, enough said, arguably the best player in the section.. allen mata is the reason yorktown was even in the hunt for sectionals, in my opinion they could’ve been blown out every single game, but his key stops were always there in the end, not to mention, he is only a sophomore. and bucky illingworth as well, only a sophomore, as a marking back, nobody got by him, and that throw in of his is just amazing.
if i could pick 3 defenders for the all-star team, they would be them
Based on watching the class B playoffs the best defender there was junior sweeper Savi Tuber, he had an inexperienced goalie behind him and made so many key stops and was arguably the best or second best player during their magical run not to menton that he took all the teams free kicks, even with this in mind he should not be taken for granted because he plays for a smaller school…also does anyone know where to find the all state selections?
All State selections can be found at, http://www.newyorksportswriters.org/reference/home.shtml
they have not updated for 2007.
How are all- state teams picked?
Is there a selection on the all-star team for cutest player in section 1, cuz if there is, gabe stauber from jjcr is the clear favorite.
I agree with Hi that gabe stauber is the cutest player in section 1. Also Lukas Wear should be an All-American, Harrison Lewin from Greeley and Mike Malan from Lakeland both didn’t score against the Indians this year. This shows that someone with the some amount of skill that Ogden has, lukas could stop with no problem, but it is also the other defenders and goalkeeper that were teammates with Lukas that made him stand out. He was second in goal scored for his team and he had the moves and he could hit people hard, that he deserves every award he has gotten.
whoever wrote the last two comments are totally ignorant and have no clue what soccer is about. High School soccer in General is a joke from Class C to AA. You want to see real soccer try playing for an Academy team. More than half of the kids that play soccer in Section 1 aren’t even soccer players. So please whoever you are talkin about most likely is bad and is not playing in college. I want to see all these kids that think there so good and play on a team such as Gotschee or Albertson and even FC Westchester. You probably don’t even know who these teams are
hahahaha Lukas Wear is trash. He’s a good high school player but kid cant get it done at higher levels. Talk about him being all american is hilarious. Obviously hes not that good if JJCR couldnt win the league or the section. and also, no player from yorktown should ever be on any sort of all section or all star team. they were the wackest team we played all year. and we played fox lane and brewster.
nuff said
to “What are you talking about”:
honestly, ur pretty dumb. the comment above ur first comment was written by an FC westchester player, and lukas is playing in college, so maybe u should get ur facts straight before u decide to open ur mouth again. Oh yeah, and section 1 is the best soccer playing section in the state, so honestly, please think before you write something, because you’re only embarrassing urself
where is lukas playing in college…if anything some really bad D3 school
Lukas wants to go to a D3 school, but a GOOD D3 school. He could easily go D1 he just decided not to. I bet he is 100 times better then you are, meaning the person with the name (I Hate Lukas Wear). I bet if you told me your name, you probably didn’t even play High School Soccer.
yeaa that really makes lukas better than ogden huh. ogden is already all-american and is most likely gonna play at syracuse. and last time i check syracuse is much better than d3…so yeaa i think that makes ogden better.
byram goalie wasnt good at all and certainly not third on that list
ok, the teams u listed were good teams (kinda) but they didnt have good defenses. that was the point of my argument. and can u name any of those defenders and tell me which ones got all-section or all-state. or how many goalies got all-section or all-state. please, if byram played against greeley or jjcr theyd lose. thau is a beast, but their defense is weak. and jjcr has luke wear(all-state) and bucky illingworth(sophomore all-section, and andrew snell(all-section, 2nd best goals against avg. in the section) ya so too bad they never played
hey i can answer that question on who got alstate for goalie in the small school Andre Ingenito of Valhalla and i know this because he is on my club team called FC Westchester
yeaa sayville only gave up 8 goals this year…so their defense had to be doing something right. and yes byrams keeper was all section and so was their center back
Girl’s All State Teams named on Newsday Website. Congrats to Amy Marron and Katie Giberson on representing Westchester!!
i’m pretty sure the byram center back who got all-section’s name is Meyers, #21. I watched Byram a few times throughout the season and i followed them during their run to a state championship. This kid was very solid in the back, anchoring a defence that only gave up 11 goals under their starting keeper in 24 games, including only 3 in the playoffs (7 games) and 4 shutouts. He shut down the great Mike Malan, who didn’t even get a shot off. 2 all-state playes on sayville were ineffective in the Byram game, which is also praise to Byram’s midfield. He was all over the place on the field and in the air and was very valuable Byram’s defense. Anyone who saw Byram’s games can attest to the great defensive play of their center back.
The best player in section 1 is Adam Purdy, I watched him play 5 times this year. He can play any position and can head the ball extremly well, he doesnt want to play in college, discouraging scouts from Uconn, Stony Brook, Syracuse, and Vasser.
adam purdy is garbage i doubt hes better than an all american like ogden
hahaahah does he even play club soccer
Just wondering… why was the Suffern goalie named to both the Westchester and Rockland All Stars/ All County? No doubt she is one of, if not the best, keeper in the area. But I was just wondering how she got in both sections.
ogden is easily the best player in section 1 and arguably the entire state of NY…watching him every game u couldnt count the number of times he has made opposing players look retarted and fall flat on their faces…hes nasty…stop hatin and move on
Ogden is no where near the best player in the state. DOZA are you even serious?
Lets talk about some kids who are even too good to be even playing NY HS soccer because they are in residency in FL. So what if ogden crossed up a few kids in class A. Wear would give ogden a run for his money anyday.
High school has some terrible defenders. People need to look at how ogden does at the club level. When he plays against premiers teams and the best teams in the US. Steve Paresi does that while Ogden doesn’t. So does Lukas Wear, he would wreck Ogden.
lukas wear plays for quickstrike…their garbage, they finished in the bottom of their division in super y.
High school soccer was once described to me as “lacrosse without sticks”, it can’t even be compared to watching high level club teams play. To see some real soccer check out a quality club like B.W. Gottschee, F.C. Westchester or Albertson- they all are part of the U.S.S.F. Academy program.
Thats why the majority of schools that are recruiting ogden first saw him during club play in competitive games.. right.. and his eastern team would smack quickstrike . All you guys are probably jealous or just retarted but the fact of the matter is he will be attending a good d1 program for soccer next year and go tell those coaches they didnt see anything in him.. Get real
Eastern FC died as a club awhile ago. what do they have to show for. Lukas Wear’s team went to the state final thats why they are really bad…Not to degrade Ogden at all he is a great player
Lukas W. and Bucky I. best combo in section 1, they would own ogden and paresi
adam purdy plays the mahopac starz, and is ligit, hes got a dominat post game at club fit too mahopac is a team that has gone undefeated for over two years, they forfeit their state cup games cus they dont wanadrive 6 hrs for a soccer game- basically were the starZ and way too cool
im sorry but arlington had the best defense this year. they allowed 6 goals all season better then all the teams on here.they play in the toughest league in section 1. david neuman is a better defender than anyone metioned on here.got all american .should have been 4 goals but 2 goals hit off football field posts and bounced in. the ref’s are blind. they were actually better skill wise this year than last year where they went 25-0 and won the whole thing.
i played with all these guys on JPSC pitbulls. all are amazing guys and all should play soccer in college gl gentlemen.
