Shocker: No. 5 Greeley knocks off top-seeded Arlington

November
1

Just got off the phone with Greeley coach Bob Oddo. Needless to say, he was about as excited as can be. His team beat defending state Class AA champ Arlington—a team that had lost one game in two years—by a slim 1-0 margin. Stephen Reisert, a sophomore, was the hero. He was nearly at a loss for words as he explained how he scored the biggest goal of his life.

Here is his take:

“Justin Karr threw it in and Dave Reison headed it and flicked onto the center. And one opposing defender couldn’t clear it. It bounced off him and it was loose in 18-yard box. I just took a step in and blasted into the upper left corner. ”

It took a minute for it to sink in.

“I was so happy. It was the greatest feeling in the world.” Reisert said. “I was so happy it was the greatest feeling in the whole world. It was so amazing. I couldn’t even think about what was going on. I thought it was a dream. I didn’t think it was real. But it was great.”

Greeley hasn’t been getting much respect by some on this blog (that doesn’t include me) and the Quakers feel they gained mucho respecto with this win today. Arlington is no slouch and features behemoths at nearly every position, but Greeley took advantage of a big scoring opportunity and made the Admirals pay. Now the Quakers will play Scarsdale, which beat Jay 1-0, for the title at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Suffern Middle School. Amazing, isn’t it?

Here’s the rest of the scores we have so far. We are just missing the Blind Brook-Haldane scores as of now. Crazy tournament so far, huh?

    scarsdale won 4-1

  2. Soccer Fan

    Wow, what an upset!

Also: wow, that Bronxville – Edgemont game was a rout! Too bad there’ll be no Bronxville – North Salem rematch. The question is: how good is Hastings?

  3. HSFan

Blind Brook won 5-1 (it was 2-1 at the half) Novick scored the 1st 2 goals, Levinson scored the 3rd

  4. kid

arlington beat greeley 1-0 n jjcr beat scarsdale 1-0

  5. hs enthusiast

valhalla – blind brook game will be a big one….lot of bad blood between the teams. First game ending in a tie and the second ending 2-1 to blind brook with valhalla missing 3 key players. Bronxville at 2:00 is where i’ll be

  6. HSFan

I can’t believe that the valhalla/Schechter game went into OT…that would have been an upset

  7. soccer

hey “kid”...u got it all wrong, scarsdale beat JJCR 1-0 and greeley won 1-0. Earlier on in the season Scarsdale beat Horace Greeley 5-1, just putting it out there

  8. RAIDERS

    SCARSDALE ALL THE WAY!!!

  9. soccer

    NO DOUBT!!

  10. CN fan

I was at the John Jay Scarsdale game and Scarsdale got lucky they won. Once again the refs made a bad call when a throw-in was clearly deflected in on the goal line. But now scarsdale will crush Greely just like in the regular season.

  11. Soccer Fan

CN fan – A little more information, please. What exactly was the bad call?

  12. Soccerboy

JJCR will own for the next few years. Just letting y’all know.

  13. soccer

it clearly wasn’t a deflection…ur just saying that because u have no other excuse for losing.

  14. kid

Yo JJCR is so mad son! hes whining and saying they are gonna be mad good but really there gonna be so bad! got that you soccerboy fruit cake

  15. Joe Hamilton

Greeley Will crush Scarsdale. Greeley only lost in the regular because of the refs. Look who Greeley just beat. Lewin and Thau the best goalie in section 1 will lead Greeley over scarsdale.

  16. Soccerboy

Kid you have no clue what you’re talking about… I predict JJCR winning sectionals next year or in years to come.

  17. Jaydad

Soccerboy is right…the throw-in was clearly deflected, not going directly in from the throw. The ball hit the top of the net…clearly impossible from a 40 yard throw! It was a shame to end an awsome game on such a blown call!
    JJCR is here to stay…

  18. Jaydad

another note…it may be time for BOCES to work in a 3 official system like most states and clubs. This 2-person system is clearly not doing it…particularly when the officials don’t have the endurance to keep up with the plays…

  19. chris

jaydad – its embarassing to make that claim… ask your players on the field what happened… dont you think they wouldve argued with the refs if they were so sure the ball was deflected rather than jog back up the field in agreement with the call?

  20. Jaydad

I did…but we don’t train our players to whine and complain to the officials…

  21. fansoccer

yea greely got so lucky. arlington had 32 shots while greeley had 3. how lucky is that

Jeff GoldJeff Gold reached the the soccer pinnacle when he was 7 years old. As the star of the Irvington Hurricanes, he led his team to a 13-0-2 record, scoring a goal in every game. Jeff didn't improve much and all of the others did. He only scored two goals as a varsity player, and one time, he was called Josh, so only one goal was official. Jeff worked at The Journal News for a year after graduating from Colgate University. He left for three years to work at Newsday, and returned to The Journal News in 2007. READ MORE
