Just Kickin’ It

High school soccer in the Lower Hudson Valley

Props to Tony Pinciaro

For those who didn’t see the story on A1 (that is, the front cover of the paper), my colleague Tony Pinciaro did a fantastic job cobbling together in about 45 minutes a “story on Brewster’s Jessi-Ann Betcher”:http://lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070926/NEWS04/709260376. Betcher came back from a heart transplant to not only play varsity soccer but score in a win over Peekskill.

Tony had never heard Betcher’s name as of 8:30 last night. He got a call from Bears coach Eric Buzzetto and, with deadline breathing down his neck and no background info to rely on, conducted interviews and wrote a complete story. Kudos to him.

I’ll follow up on Betcher in the coming weeks. Hopefully my editors will let me tackle the story in more detail, with a little more time to do research.

Hi. I heard about Jessie-Ann’s story on WFAN this morning. Am wondering if you could let her know about the upcoming 2008 US Transplant Games happening this July in Pittsburgh? Team Liberty, consisting of some 40 transplant athletes from the Greater NY/NJ area, will be there competing in olympic-style events. It would be fantastic to have Jessie join the team if she is interested. She could google “2008 US Transplant Games” or email me (sas@cs.sunysb.edu) for more info. Thank you. Scott Smolka

Jeff GoldJeff Gold reached the the soccer pinnacle when he was 7 years old. As the star of the Irvington Hurricanes, he led his team to a 13-0-2 record, scoring a goal in every game. Jeff didn't improve much and all of the others did. He only scored two goals as a varsity player, and one time, he was called Josh, so only one goal was official. Jeff worked at The Journal News for a year after graduating from Colgate University. He left for three years to work at Newsday, and returned to The Journal News in 2007. READ MORE
